Open world survival game filled with dinosaurs, humans and weapons coming to next-gen consoles and PC

17243406909_977d1bbee6_zWhat do you get when you mix an open world, dinosaurs and Unreal Engine 4? Ark: Survival Evolved.

Announced today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, Ark pits players in an open setting as they play as a human character trying to survive the onslaught of dinosaurs and maybe even dragons (see the end of the trailer).

At the player’s disposal are guns, torches, hand-made hammers and more as they fight (sometimes alongside the dinosaurs or even on top of them) to survive amongst the more ferocious of the jurassic beasts.

Developed by a new studio called Wildcard, which is said to be comprised of industry vets, Ark will first debut in June of this year as an Early Access game on Steam.

The studio had the following to say as part of a Facebook comment announcing the game.

“As young kids, we played with our dinosaur toys and imagined ancient, lost worlds where such massive creatures roamed free – we also cried our eyes out through repeated viewings of ‘The Land Before Time’, and we’re not afraid to admit it. As we grew, we were captivated by the mere thought of exploring the towering cities of ‘Dinotopia’. ‘Jurassic Park’ took this all to a new level, and thrilled, excited, and even touched us with its time-honored animatronics, mind-boggling puppetry, and the terror of facing down what is still regarded as the most impressive T-Rex to ever grace cinema.”

All of this inspired the team to create Ark. No release window was announced for console, but realistically, it probably won’t hit consoles until next year. The trailer below is said to be captured with online gameplay and it’s pretty amazing. If the game delivers on everything it promises, this could be the game to finally revive what has been a fairly mediocre offering of dinosaur-related games.

Lastly, a post at the PlayStation Blog confirmed that the game will fully support Sony’s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset. Talk about nightmares!
