The new virtual reality headset will set gamers back $400, PSVR set to release this October

Update: Sony has confirmed via a press release that all PS4 games can be played in the VR headset through a cinematic mode that allows players to play the games on a virtual 225 inch screen from a virtual 2.5 meters away. Update 2: Sony has announced that a $499.99 bundle will include PSVR, two Move controllers, the PS4 Eye Camera, a demo disc and the game PlayStation VR Worlds. The bundle goes on sale March 22 at 7 a.m. PT and will be sold in limited, pre-sale only quantities.

3022339-vrSony announced today at the 2016 Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) that PlayStation’s Virtual Reality headset will release in October 2016 and will cost $399.99 in the US.

Originally set to release in the first half of 2016, Sony’s PlayStation 4-powered virtual reality headset comes in at $200 less than its Facebook-owned competitor Oculus Rift and $400 less than the HTC Vive.

The biggest advantage for PSVR is that it runs on PlayStation 4 and works with Move controllers where the other VR alternatives require a gaming PC. There are 36 million PS4s in homes around the world currently, so that’s a lot of potential customers for Sony’s new headset.

According to PlayStation president Andrew House, there are over 230 studios — big and small — working on games for PSVR. Games being worked on include an exclusive VR experience for Star Wars Battlefront, according to GameSpot.

“We expect to have more than 50 games available from launch in October 2016 until the end of the year,” said House in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “Of course, the full promise of PlayStation VR will continue to grow over time as talented developers create new experiences and new genres that wouldn’t be possible outside of VR. The future looks bright indeed.”

According to the GDC presentation, the system features a 5.7 inch OLED display, 1920 x 1080 resolution per eye, 120 hz and 90 hz refresh rates, 360 degree tracking with 9 LEDs, “3D audio”, an approximate 100 degree field of view, less than 18 milliseconds of latency and is controlled by the DualShock 4 and PS Move controllers, which means a PlayStation camera is required and Sony has confirmed to IGN (see update) that it is not included in the $400 price tag.

No word on whether the $400 price tag will include any full retail games, though Sony did announce some new titles today. Also, a free download of The Playroom VR will come with the system at launch, according to the PlayStation Blog.
