If you missed seeing PlayStation at E3 last year, you may want to get used to it.

Sony announced today that it will not attend E3 in June. Sony skipped the show last year as well, saying it no longer fits with its strategy for the brand.

A Sony spokesperson confirmed the news to, according to PlayStation Lifestyle, verifying what had already been rumored by various sources online.

With the PlayStation 5 expected to hit store shelves this year, Sony told that it would instead hold community events to help consumers learn about the upcoming console.

“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe,” Sony said. “Our focus is on making sure fans feel  part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content.”

It’s unclear what exactly that means as Sony has not yet released a schedule for these events and did not offer further details. But with the PS5 slated for a holiday 2020 release, it shouldn’t be long before we learn more.

By the way the company made it sound, it could prove to be even better than seeing the games in an E3 setting as it sounds like Sony is aiming to have more fans play its upcoming titles prior to release.

The company recently showed off the PS5 logo, which is very similar to the PS4 logo, and it set off a plethora of memes, sarcasm and funny social media posts.

However, it also proved that fans are eager to know more about the new console, its launch library and everything else related to the next-generation system.

It’s probably no surprise though as Sony recently announced PlayStation 4 sales had reached the 100 million mark.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Entertainment Software Association, which operates E3, will respond and if Sony’s absence for the second year in a row will have any kind of major impact on the show.

This year’s E3 event will be held from June 9 through 11 in Los Angeles.
