The PlayStation Store for the PSP will still fully shut down this summer as previously announced
Those who were upset about the announcement that the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita online stores would soon close can sigh a breath of relief and celebrate.
PlayStation’s President and CEO for Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan revealed in a PlayStation Blog post Monday that the PS3 and Vita online stores will remain open for the “foreseeable future.”
In the post, Ryan explained Sony’s reasoning behind the original decision as well as its reasoning for keeping the stores open going forward.
“Upon further reflection…it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here,” Ryan said. “When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on.”
Ryan attributed the reversal of Sony’s decision to the outcry from fans on social media.
“We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations,” he said.
It’s important to point out that Ryan said the PSP store’s remaining functionality will still cease on July 2, 2021, as previously announced.
That store originally shut down in 2016, but as of July 2, users will no longer be able to access the PlayStation Store from in-game menus on the platform.
According to Video Games Chronicle, more than 2,000 digital games would have no longer been purchasable had the PS3 and Vita stores shut down.
In addition, approximately 138 games would have become unavailable to purchase anywhere due to only being available digitally on the platforms. You can check out VGC’s breakdown of those games here.
IGN reported, in addition, that several developers who were still planning game releases on Vita were not told of the closure prior to its announcement.
There’s no word on when or if the PS3 and PS Vita stores will one day cease operations, but for now, there’s still plenty of time to purchase games and add-ons for older titles on those platforms.
